Playground

I had a full day at co-op yesterday, which entailed recess with all grades after lunch. Erin stayed by my side. She cuddled under my jacket because she felt cold. She ran around me like a maypole and laughed when I reached out and tickled her. I picked her up and held her close. I wondered why she wasn't on the playground with the other kids.

"Who do you normally play with after lunch?" I asked, naming a few kids.

"Sometimes [her] and one time [her] and sometimes I'm just by myself," she said. The words hit close to home, and I saw sadness in her eyes.

"You're such a sweet girl, and a good friend," I encouraged. "I'm sure you make friends easily."

"You are my first friend," she told me.
